Do you remember the old adage “eat your peas and carrots”?  Not a problem when they are imaginatively created from assorted candies, cookies, frosting, and decorate the tops of even more frosting that is lush and creamy and completely covers heavenly light cupcakes.  Non vegans crunched on lucky rabbit’s feet, and coconut covered marshmallow bunny tails.  A real veggie garden of delights was a short hop away for the waistline conscience.  Thank you hostesses for the darling whimsy of the spring season:  Linda Mosley and Laura Wick.

La Sierra Guild active membership stands at 28.  Over half of our active members attended the April 14th general meeting, along with 2 associate members, and 1 guest.  Thank you Laura Wick for bringing your mother as a guest, she is charming.

Berta Lindman, All Guild’s Fundraising Committee Chairman, brought to our attention the agenda items that required an immediate vote.  You may recall that the circus, herald for a couple of years as an enormous fundraising success, is no longer feasible. Brainstorming for an alternative all guilds event has continued for several months at each Coordinating Council meeting.  Recently the all guild’s leadership team was approached by a local builder with an offer that is hard to refuse.  At no cost to the guilds, they have proposed to build extraordinary “play houses” to be raffled off at $25.00 a ticket (approx. value of each “play house” is $5,000).   The idea is that the guilds will take turns selling the tickets at River Park in Fresno where the “play houses” will be displayed.  100% of the proceeds will be given to guilds in support of the $5 Million dollar Abuse Prevention and Treatment Endowment. The “Play Houses” will be built as soon as possible; the builders will team with local radio stations to promote ticket sales; a local pizza parlor has agreed to print the tickets at no cost to the guilds;  tickets will be available for sales beginning in August and ending in October, 2010.  This is all dependent on an all guilds majority vote.

The next all guilds fundraising proposal requiring our vote has to do with the option of supporting a Spring 2011 “Opening Night” for the Broadway play, “Wicked”, which garnered enormously successful reviews.  The Soroyan Theater in Fresno was selected as the venue, and Pardini’s rivaled to cater the pre-show party.   The ticket range theorized was between $25.00--$145.00, dependent upon theater seating arrangements.  The early vote was required so that donors, similar to the circus event, could be solicited and depending on the success and favorable interest of those solicitations, a decision can be rendered by the Coordinating Council as to whether it is cost effective to proceed.

Our La Sierra Guild Coordinating Council (CC) Representative, Margaret Starr, identified proposed organizational changes addressed at the March CC meeting.  The proposed changes are as follows:

Supporting and endorsing these changes:

·        Our current guild leadership:  Stephanie Houlding, Chair; Nancy Masich, Vice Chair; and Tracy Lifer, Advisory Board Chair.

·        Bill Haug, who has encouraged these changes for many years.

·        Jim Meinert, who has followed our lead and changed Foundation Executive Board terms from one year to two years.

·        Teresa Fierro, who sees the most value in these changes—building a longer term relationship with the Guild Manager, longer than one year is invaluable.

These changes will:

A La Sierra Guild’s majority vote was passed to support the proposed changes.

Margaret Starr continued with the CC report as she highlighted the Pink Pig requests that were voted on and passed at the March CC meeting.  Remember, the Pink Pig fund provides support to Children’s Hospital departments with small requests.  Those answered requests for funds allow the Hospital’s children and families to feel more comfortable in what can often be a stressful or sorrowful environment.   Recent departmental requests were voted on by the CC and granted as follows:  Potty Seats for Pediatrics; stuffed animals to comfort day surgery patients; comfort cart replenishment for hospice care patients/families; neo-natal water bottles to help new mommies keep hydrated and promote milk production.

In a continued effort to promote hand hygiene, sanitation, cleanliness, and health, Children’s Hospital has started a “crayon drive”.  All guild members are asked to donate boxes of new crayons which will be delivered to Children’s Hospital.  The crayons will be used by the patients to color informative sheets of paper that depict different aspects of hygiene and will be helpful to all family members and visitors to the hospital.

Continued CC reporting—All Guild’s Picnic—Wednesday, May 26, 2010.  Hosts: Holiday Guild and themed “Gifts for the Children”.  It will be held at the Ueland estate, 7529 W. Shaw Avenue, Fresno (SW corner of Garfield & W. Shaw Avenue, 2 miles west of Highway 99).  Social hour: 11:00 Luncheon:  Noon.  The cost is $22.00 per person.  Make checks payable to the La Sierra Guild and give our Treasurer, Buffy Swire, a call to arrange to deliver the check to her.  May 19th is the cut-off date for each guild to submit their 1 check and RSVP for the event. Do not wait!   Remember, this social event is well attended by every guild.  Each guild has a booth and a story board.  Most guilds sell items.  We usually sell our Fall Raffle tickets.  Each guild is asked to provide an item for a door prize.  Volunteer of the year members are recognized for each guild.

Our year to host the All Guild’s Picnic is 2014.  We can share the event with another guild.

La Sierra Guild’s Volunteer of the Year.  A small form was passed out to La Sierra Guild members in attendance at the April 14th meeting.  The form had a space to write a nominee for Volunteer of the Year 2010.  The names of past winners were listed, because they cannot be chosen twice.  Everyone turned in their submittals.  The La Sierra Guild Board meets, tallies the votes, and our President, Patty Privett, introduces the winner at the All Guild’s Picnic.
